1. Diagonal Mar is transforming,
    you’re seeing it happen

In 2001, Diagonal Mar opened its doors – a shopping centre in one of the most innovative areas in 21st century Barcelona. In 2017 it will be transformed to ensure a more sustainable and comfortable future for its visitors, shops and neighbours.

  2. Diagonal Mar today

Diagonal Mar was built in the context of the development of the Sant Martí district, when a new neighbourhood was created along the final stretch of Avinguda Diagonal. Today, this area of the city is the location for more than 40 hotels, the 22@ business and innovation district and the Barcelona International Convention Centre, all adjacent to the Mediterranean Sea. The shopping centre includes more than 200 units, which span a broad offering of shopping, leisure and dining for the general public at large.

    A project for the future

After more than 15 years of history, Diagonal Mar is transforming to adapt to the needs of its more than 17 million annual visitors. The project has a budget of over €30 million, dedicated to renovating the shopping centre to achieve peak performance while minimizing the impact on users, creating spaces for new retailers, and adapting the centre to the latest advances in technology, design and sustainability to create a more attractive and comfortable shopping experience.

    • A continuing commitment to the environment

The project includes environmental criteria to create a more sustainable and environmentally responsible shopping centre.

    A sustainable space

The centre will be outfitted with the latest energy-saving technologies, including adjustable LED lighting, low-flow faucets and free-cooling AC systems. Moreover, the materials used will be low-impact and eco-friendly, the acoustics will be improved for better listening comfort, and energy savings will be promoted through the construction of skylights and a controlled consumption of electricity.

    The Architects

The design was developed by the architectural firm CBRE, a world leader in real estate services, and by the office of the prestigious interior and industrial designer Francesc Rifé, winner of design awards such as the Contract World Awards, Red Dot, the Emporia Awards for Ephemeral Architecture, the ICFF Editors Awards, the FAD Awards and the ASCER.

“The project for the renovation of Diagonal Mar is one of the most important milestones in the shopping centre’s life cycle. At CBRE Arquitectura, we are proud to contribute to creating value for this commercial asset, which is a benchmark in Barcelona from the point of view of architecture and design.”
